While watching an intense debate on a TV channel today morning, over the repercussions of recent withdrawals of cash-less hospitalization benefits by most of the major Indian Insurance companies, a thought suddenly came to my mind: Do we need a OBAMA like leader, here, for streamlining “India’s Health-Care System,” which, no doubt, is, less fortunate than, even an orphan.

I’m sure, most of my Indian readers must have experienced, once at least, how painful it is, to get an appropriate cost-effective treatment in any private hospital these days.

Now read the verdict of Delhi High Court on one such incident,

(c) The bills in respect of 22 employees (post at IGIA) and their family members listed in Annexure-2 have also been examined and it was found that bills are inflated and/or excess charged and the amount had been deducted from almost every bill. The details of which are given in Annexure-3.(d) It is seen from the name and designation of the patients that almost all of them are belonging to Class-IV (Group ‘D’) employees like Safaiwala, Belder etc., who are generally not much educated. The hospital took advantage of their lower educational level of the employees and had admitted them even for minor ailments and also raised the inflated bills which resulted in deduction as brought out in the foregoing paras.(e) It is also clear from Annexure-1 & 3 that approx.10-12% billing amounts are either inflated and/or charged in excess which clearly establishes that M/s.Sunil Nursing Home had been indulging in unfair practices.

Recently, my brother, suffering from high fever, went to a reputed hospital and in no time he was ill-advised for immediate admission terrifying him of the consequences if he decides against it. He refused and consulted another doctor; this time not a consultant operating from private clinics but from residence. Trust me, it took him a few days to completely recover staying at home, and the treatment cost was less than a tenth of the estimated expenditure that the other doctor indicated.

For various reasons: High mortality rate, technological advancement etc, medical profession has recently undergone a major transformation in terms of corporatization; however, why in India, still, there’s no effective regulatory system in place that can successfully eradicate so called health-care malpractices.

DNA in April carried a story on how hospitals make money on syringes this way, drawing as much as Rs24,000 from 100 patients (assuming each used 24 syringes at an MRP of Rs12 each, which the hospital bought at Rs2 each). Now DNA has a copy of an agreement between a leading corporate chain running over 40 hospitals in the country and a manufacturer, proving the practice.

I think, we must learn a few lessons from the US in this respect and immediately create a result-oriented infrastructure to regulate Indian health-care system.

Do you too think in the similar way? if so, what would you like to propose?

Amazing and highly disturbing, is HT’s revelation: How Maoist insurgents are running a parallel administration in parts of West Bengal while our Dada and Didi are fighting it out over WB’s control.

And at HO, Amma and Paaji are extremely busy over saving a high profile minister despite having crystal clear evidences of corruption against him — and the UPA alliance in the center.

Shame!!!

Surprising is, Indian governments reluctance to engage Army in. If at all the victory is doubtful, then, I think, keeping in view the recent success of Sri Lanka in crushing Tigers, Amma should instruct Paaji for importing a ‘Sri Lankan Peace Keeping Force’ for restoring law-and-order situation in that area.

What do you say?

Success, for me, means: A combination of fame and money that you’ve earned and retained up-till a given time.

My neighbor, a Kirana shop owner, with assets worth more than a few million dollar is successful, but not in totality — because, an equally important component, fame, is missing in his case.

And, my father – an exceptionally intelligent intellectual enjoying a huge popularity in his circle – who, living on a pension of slightly more than a hundred dollar a month is successful as far as fame is concerned, but, in his case, the money factor is missing.

In totality, beyond a limit that you set for yourself in terms of a financially secured future for you and your family members, what matters most is: Achieving an intellectual recognition or fame.

Bill Gates, in my opinion, is an appropriate example. Because, despite being one of the most successful entrepreneurs of all times, he, unlike Steve Jobs of Apple, moved onto something that would make people remember him as a great personality rather than the founder of Microsoft. Right?

So success – when analyzed microscopically – is nothing, but a combination of both monetary as well as intellectual achievements; however, the inclination is more towards the latter than the former.

‘First impression is the last impression,’ someone said and we know it’s true.

Even if there’s a scope for change, I’ve noticed: Image change in negative direction is almost instantaneous; however, all efforts to improve upon existing is, almost impossible. Don’t forget, I said, almost!

Quite awkwardly, I discovered this fact during a recent visit to my home town where I met a couple of childhood friends after a decade or so.

It was a joyful reunion and every thing appeared normal for next few days until one day a minor issue turned into a hot argument, disclosing a shocking fact that my current lifestyle was perceived by them as deliberate show off. All my efforts to explain things in the right perspective found no takers, unfortunately.

This incident reminded me the findings of a recent survey, claiming, people always evaluate their ‘success in life’ against that of their relations: Relatives, friends, colleagues and all falling within their ‘area of influence.’

So, if your current status is better than what’s embedded into their belief system you need to be extremely careful to ensure a slow and steady transformation over a period of time, otherwise you may end up loosing them, forever, and that’s exactly what happened with me.

This experience has taught me following lessons:

1. What is normal for you, now, may not be so for them. Hence, in the beginning, you must ensure a situation specific projections of your attitudes and habits.

2. Even if you’re more successful in life, never let it reflect into your behavior.

3. Remain subdued until you are finally accepted, and that old emotional link is re-kindled.

Though unsuccessful, I still believe that changing your image is difficult but not impossible, and adopting the right strategy over a period of time will definitely make them accept you as what you are — forgetting what you were.

When you sit in remote corner of a crowded place desperately wanting to talk to someone over phone, and out of may be a few hundred contact numbers saved in your address book not even a single could give you enough confidence that the other person would give you a patient hearing, letting you vent out your pains and agonies — then, you’re already trapped into a serious relationship twister threatening to wipe out your existence, if you don’t move, immediately, out of its path.

It happens, sometime, and with most of us. However, with a few it becomes a part of daily life and this strange feeling of loneliness keeps pushing them into oblivion until they hit the point of no return, sadly!

I don’t have a convincing solution to this problem and would look forwards to your valuable suggestions.

7 years ago we’re retained by a small Indian corporate, willing to pay the recruitment fee which was 50 pct more than the common trend at that time.

To start with, Managing Director of the company established a direct communication channel with me, following up vigorously, to ensure successful completion of each and every critical assignments.

Since then we’ve been working hard for his company, identifying right candidates from target organizations and successfully pulling them out of the comfort zone.

In that process, we must have recruited a few hundred professionals so far, including 4 of the 6 current business heads and more than a few dozens senior level candidates.

Let me now share with you the growth story of the company: 1000 pct in seven years, unbelievable but true.

What made an otherwise small and unknown company to grow so hugely, is apparently a big question but has a very simple answer: Effective Talent Acquisition. The answer, if highlighted in the right forum with evidential support, would make this initiative qualify for an ideal case study pertaining to effective talent management. And, I’m more than willing to make a presentation if there’s an audience.

Okay, what impressed me most during this delightful association, so far, is the MD’s remarkable understanding of the importance of talent acquisition that he translated into reality by launching a massive ‘Executive Search’ program – through us – ultimately transforming the company into one of the largest in its segment today.

Frankly speaking, I’ve not yet come across another initiative of such a huge magnitude, rather experienced what is diagonally opposite to this.

Sadly, leadership in most of the companies I know are still allergic to direct involvement in talent acquisition and quite a few even proudly declare their detachment as professional achievement, in terms of successful delegation.

It’s hard to believe that they’re not aware of its importance, still! ‘ Sun rises in the east,’ is an universal truth and I’m sure the Chimps too know about it; So is effective talent acquisition — key to business success.

But, why then there are no convincing evidences so far, in favor?
